Chapter 9: The Hearing

The disciplinary hearing was held at ten the next morning in a paneled room on the second floor of the administration building.

There were five people at the long table.

The Dean sat in the middle, with two professors on his left and the chair of the Board of Trustees on his right.

At the end of the table sat a heavy man in a gray suit, with Brielle's red hair and her exact smile.

He was her father, and he was a trustee.

Preston sat beside a lawyer in a very good tie, holding an ice pack to his shoulder with great suffering.

I sat across from them in my one clean sweater.

Behind me, Larissa had brought a thermos, and she kept pressing it into my hands.

"We are here," said the Dean, "regarding an alleged assault yesterday, and a complaint by Miss Pengelly about a vehicle removal."

"A violent attack," said Preston's lawyer, "on a young man with a documented shoulder."

"Three students filmed it," the Dean said. "In all three, Mr. Gale takes hold of her first. Mr. Gale, you are on formal probation, and you may leave."

Preston opened his mouth.

"Now, Mr. Gale."

He left, red to the ears, and the lawyer followed with the ice pack.

My shoulders came down, and Larissa squeezed my elbow.

"Now," said the Dean. "The tow."

I stood up and laid the pink carbon copy on the table.

"The yard's own log has my car leaving lot C at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday," I said. "I'd like the trustee to explain how a signature can come ninety minutes after the truck."

"A clerical delay," said Brielle's father.

"Whoever wrote 'abandoned' never checked," I said. "I slept in that car every night that week."

"You what?" said the chair of the Board.
