Chapter 24: Sunday
Joan's kitchen on Sunday smelled of onions and browning butter.
The chair had said nothing definite on Friday except that the board would let them know.
Joan had said a great deal, to Declan, by phone, on Saturday.
Now Declan stood at her counter in his shirtsleeves with flour to the elbows, folding a pierogi.
"Pinch," said Joan.
"I am pinching."
"You're drafting. Pinch it like you mean it."
Declan looked at the dumpling in his palm.
It was a perfect half-moon, crimped, with edges you could have measured with a ruler.
"It's good," Maggie said, from the table, with her mouth full of cheese-and-potato.
"It's very good. It's too good. It looks like a government made it."
"Thank you."
"That wasn't a compliment."
"He's blushing," said Joan. "Look at the ears. Eli, look at his ears."
Eli was at the sink, drying a colander, and he did not look at Declan's ears.
