Chapter 30: Ten Years
The Fairmount lot at dawn was a rectangle of frozen gravel behind a chain-link fence.
The old freight depot rose on the far side, rust-red against a white sky.
Eli stood in the middle of the lot with a drawing tube under his arm and his breath going up in clouds.
Declan came through the gap in the fence at ten past six.
He wore a wool coat and a scarf Eli had never seen.
He stopped three yards off.
"You said six."
"I said six, and you're ten minutes late."
"I walked the long way," Declan said. "I wanted to see it in the light first."
"It looks like a parking lot."
"It looks," Declan said, "like where the door goes."
Eli laughed.
Then he stopped, because he had planned this speech for a week and it had gone out of his head.
"I have something to say," he said.
"All right."
"Without the voice, so you'll have to take it as it comes."
Declan's whole face went still and careful.
Eli looked at the gravel.
"In the first week of studio, third year, you stood up at the pin-up and told a visiting critic he was wrong."
"I remember."
"You said it so politely he thanked you."
"Then you drew a line on the board to show him. One line. It was the straightest thing I had ever seen."
