Chapter 15: Hadrian's Key
Torin was on his feet and between me and the door before the lock finished turning.
He had no sword, and he stood there in nothing but his breeches with his fists up.
The door swung open on Hadrian.
He held a lamp in one hand and the cell key in the other.
Behind him in the passage stood six of the Regent's guards with their spears grounded.
I knew them.
They were the six who had stood around Wynne's bed.
"Put your hands down, Warden," Hadrian said. "I am not here to stop you."
"Then what are you here for?"
"To open the door."
He looked at the wall, where the frost had run off and the stone was warm.
Then he looked at the black ash of the blanket on the cot.
His face did not change.
"I moved these men off the gallery an hour ago," he said, loud enough for the passage.
"I told them the Regent wanted the cell doubled."
"He did not."
The guard nearest him shifted his feet.
"Marshal," the man said uneasily. "The Regent said no one opens it."
