Chapter 16: The Girl in the Ash
"Don't be cross," Wynne whispered, without turning around. "I didn't mean to."
I crossed the floor on my toes and knelt by the bed.
Her cheeks were wet, and the little flame danced between her fingers, bright enough to light her whole face.
"I'm not cross," I said.
"It came when I was dreaming. Papa says never let it come."
"Why does he say that?"
"Because of the old man."
She held her hands out to me.
"Will you make it stop? You made it stop before."
I looked at the flame, and my own palms warmed in answer.
"I'll show you how to make it sleep," I said. "Not how to make it stop. Those are two different things."
She sniffed and looked at me with her gold-ringed eyes.
"Put your hands under mine," I said.
She tipped the flame into my cupped palms.
It did not burn.
It lay there, a small gold seed, and I felt it turn toward my skin like a cat finding a lap.
