Chapter 19: Kneel

The Ember steps were a hundred broad stairs of white stone.

At the foot of them lay the Dragon's Court, a wide bronze-paved yard where no one had parked a cart in a generation.

Today it was packed from wall to wall.

Halvard had come to see its Regent take back his crown, and the Regent's grey guards stood in ranks along the stairs.

At the top, under a canopy of black silk, Aldous sat in a carved chair with a blanket across his knees.

Hadrian stood bound at his right hand, chained to an iron post, with a split lip and his coat torn at the shoulder.

On the far side of the yard, behind a wall of northern riders, I saw a white beard and a tall grey sergeant.

A small pale head was held high on a man's arm.

The man was Torin, and the sergeant stood at his shoulder.

Wynne saw me and waved.

I raised my hand, and a ripple of whispers ran through the crowd at the fire in it.

I walked out onto the first step alone.

"Lady Bracken," Aldous called down, and his thin voice carried to the last row. "You are late, and you are unattended."

"I am not late. I was seeing to a friend."
