Chapter 24: Kneel for Your Luna
The full moon came up over Ashenveil five weeks after the Wolf Moon.
By noon the trucks were lined up all the way down the road from the east gate.
Ironclaw came over Greyfrost Bridge in a long grey line.
This time nobody met them with torches and teeth.
Ashenveil wolves stood along the road with thermoses of coffee and waved them in.
Every Alpha who had sat on the Council came back for it.
I dressed in the guest house by the east gate.
The same room, the same fire.
Freya sat on the bed and watched me, swinging her boots.
She was wearing a new silver ring on her right hand, the Alpha's, and she kept turning it with her thumb.
"I made you something," she said.
She held out a parcel wrapped in brown paper.
Inside was a pair of white slippers.
Soft wool, with little silver moons stitched across the toes.
"I watched you sew the first ones," Freya said. "I was nineteen. I thought they were the prettiest things I'd ever seen."
"You only have to walk to the stone in these," she said. "Not one step further."
