Chapter 19: Eleven Doors

On Friday afternoon, the day before the gala, I knocked on a door in North Las Vegas with my hand shaking.

The duplex had a dead lawn and a rideshare sticker in the window of a red sedan.

Reuben stood one step behind me on the porch, in a plain flannel shirt, hands loose at his sides.

"You don't have to go first," he said quietly.

"Yes, I do."

The door opened on a chain.

A woman about forty looked out, in sweatpants, with a dish towel on her shoulder.

I knew her from a pink slip and a handwritten note.

She had been a baccarat dealer for eleven years, until she told a floor supervisor about her tips.

"Mr. Lowry," she said. Her eyes moved to me. "Who's this?"

"My name is Veronica Ellington," I said.

Nobody on the porch breathed.

"I own the Aurora. Last Friday a woman stood in the ballroom and said she did, and she's lying. I'm the one you wrote to when you filed that complaint."

"I filed it with HR."

"HR sent it to my office, and my office buried it. Reuben wrote me about you ten times in two years." I made myself keep looking at her. "I didn't read a word of it. That isn't an excuse. It's what happened."

The chain stayed on.

"You fired me," she said.

"I did, in effect. I signed Finnegan's contract. I let him write the policy that did it."

"You want me to feel sorry for you."

"No." My throat was tight. "I want to tell you that you were right, and that nobody listened, and that it should have been me."

She stared at me.

Then she shut the door.
