Chapter 9: Eleven Letters

"Nobody up there reads these," Reuben said, without turning around.

I froze in the doorway with my heart in my throat.

"You can come in, Birch. You've been standing there for a full minute."

I walked into the security office.

He still hadn't looked up.

He hit the last key on the page, read it once, and pushed back his chair.

"I'd guess you didn't come to read my mail."

"I came to find you," I said, and it was the truth. "I couldn't sleep."

"Neither could I."

He nodded at the screen.

"Letter twelve."

I read it standing up.

It was addressed to the owner, and it was three paragraphs long.

The first said a line cook had lost two fingertips to a broken slicer that maintenance was told to leave unrepaired.

The second named the dealers whose tips had been cut fifteen percent.

The third was a single line.

I am asking you to come and see the floor. Come in a plain dress if you want to. Nobody here will know your face.

I read that line twice.

Under it, a postscript said a new night janitor had refused to kneel for Finnegan in front of the high rollers.

My throat caught.

"You mention me," I said.

"I mention what I see." He shrugged. "I thought the owner should know somebody down here has a spine."

"You don't know who the owner is."

"No. Nobody does." He leaned back and rubbed his eyes. "The staff think she's a rich old man. The board says she's very private. Walter's girl, supposedly. I've never seen a picture."

"But you write to her."

"I write to the address on the back of the employee handbook." He took a thick brown folder out of the bottom drawer. "I've written to it for two years."

He laid the folder on the desk and opened it.

Inside was a stack of letters, each one clipped to a printed reply.
