Chapter 20: Against the Door

The truck had barely stopped when I opened my own door.

Snow came down on the farmyard in thick slow flakes, and the porch light was already on.

I took my cane up the ramp on my own, fast, as fast as I could go.

Roe locked the truck and came up the steps behind me two at a time.

I got the front door open, and I got us both inside, and I stood in the dark hall with my back to the wood.

He shut the door.

For a second we only looked at each other.

The snow on his shoulders was melting, and his chest was going up and down.

"Take off your coat," I said.

He took it off and let it drop.

"Now stand against the door."

"Which-"

"This one. Where I was."

We swapped.

I took his wrists in my hands, hard, and walked him backward three steps until his back hit the boards.

The wood thumped.

I let go of my cane.

It clattered on the floor.

I held his wrists against the door at the level of his shoulders, and I looked up at him.

It's a strange thing to be the shorter one in a room and be absolutely in charge.

"Keep them there," I said. "Don't move your hands off the wood."

"Yes, Luna."

"I mean it."

"I know."

I let go and began on his buttons.

I did it slowly, one at a time, on a flannel that was damp with snow.
