The lake did not answer in words.
The howling stopped.
Both voices cut off at once, the huge one and the old one.
The floes quit knocking together.
The current in the lead slowed, and stopped, and the black water lay under my palm as flat as a table.
Sixty people stood on the stones and did not breathe.
I felt it listening.
Not the way a judge listens, or a priest.
The way an animal does that has been alone a very long time.
I thought of the man on the ice every night for ten years with his hand spread flat.
I thought of the man who had sat on a rock until I told him to move.
I thought, I do not want to be what holds them.
Nobody had asked me whether I wanted to be a lock.
Nobody had asked the wolves.
The water under my hand turned warm.
Only a little, only the way a cup is warm when someone else has been holding it.
