Chapter 22: Two Girls and a Boy
The radio clicked in my hand.
"Map Lady."
"I see you," he said. "Porch light's out, but I see you. Stay inside. I'm coming up."
Big Walrus came up the street with its blade down.
The first tree was an old maple, lying across both lanes with its roots in the air.
He didn't slow down.
The blade caught the trunk and shoved it, groaning, up onto the boulevard, and the whole truck shook.
Then a tangle of branches as big as a garage, which he pushed ahead of him like a pile of snow.
He stopped thirty feet short of the corner, where the power line lay sparking on the wet street.
"Line down at the corner of my block," he told dispatch. "I'm parking it. I'm walking."
He came up the yard on foot, through the rain, in his orange vest.
Marit opened the door before he got to it.
Tova was awake, standing on the couch in her pajamas with the flashlight.
Another contraction hit me in the hallway, and I grabbed the wall.
He waited until it was over, and then he picked me up, the way he had in the ditch.
