Chapter 25: Six Weeks

I read the number twice.

Three point eight million.

Four winters of trucks at the diner with the blade up.

The reporter held her phone out to me.

"Ms. Sandvik. Do you have a comment on the auditor's findings?"

I looked up at the fourth floor of the county building.

Karin was standing at a window up there with her phone at her ear.

"Ask the mayor," I said. "She's right upstairs. She knows the way down."

Every camera on the steps tipped up toward the window.

Karin stepped back out of it.

That night the report ran on every station in Minnesota.

The auditor had found it all.

The trucks at the diner. The trucks in the yard. The 61-mile-an-hour plowing.

Page forty had the street below Karin's house, logged plowed at 2:10 on January 9, with a note in plain type.

A city employee was stranded on this street at approximately 2:40 p.m.

Jens read that line out loud at the kitchen table.

Then he read it again, slower.

Then he went out on the porch and stood there for a while by himself.

The next morning was my six-week checkup.

My OB pressed on my stomach and looked at the scar.

"Healed," she said. "Good. How's the comma?"

"Five pounds, six ounces. She bit Tova."

"She doesn't have teeth."

"She tried."

The OB wrote something on her chart.

Then she looked at Jens, who was standing by the door with the diaper bag over his shoulder.

"Anything that's comfortable," she said. "Same as before. Go easy."

Jens looked at the ceiling.

"Every time," he said.

"Every time you're in my office," the OB said, "you're holding a bag for somebody. I like you."

That afternoon Marit came downstairs with her son on her hip and a list.

"I'm taking the plows tonight," she said.

"All three?"

"All four. Three of yours and one of mine." She held up the list. "Bottles at eleven, two and five. I've watched you do it fifty times. I'm your identical twin. They won't know the difference."
