Chapter 32: Every Street
I read the warning twice.
Then I picked up the radio from the windowsill.
"Copy," I said. "Tell everybody I'll have the plan out by six."
I wrote the storm plan at the kitchen table that night, the way I always had.
C asleep on my chest. A and B asleep in the yard.
Tova at my elbow in her pajamas, with a pencil, checking my work.
"Why is the hospital first?"
"Because people have to get there."
"Why is our street last?"
"Because we have a plow in the family."
She thought about it.
"That's fair," she said, and wrote FAIR in the margin.
Since November, the council had voted money for fourteen new city trucks.
The hillside streets were back on city routes.
Route 14 was Jens's again, every street of it.
Including mine.
The snow started Friday at ten in the morning, sideways off the lake.
By noon you couldn't see the water from the hill.
I ran it from the snow operations center at the city garage.
The long room with no windows.
The wall I built, where they'd turned off unit nine in front of everybody.
