Chapter 12: The Sender
On Monday morning my mother took the day off for the first time in a year.
She wore her one good blazer over her work shirt, and she held my hand all the way across the school lobby.
"You don't have to say anything," she said. "I'll say it."
"You don't know what it is."
"I know you." She squeezed. "That's enough."
The principal's office had a long window and a short couch, and the principal did not sit behind her desk.
She sat on the couch with a thick folder on her knees, and she had dark circles under her eyes.
"Thank you for coming. Selah, sit down."
I sat on the other end of the couch.
"I came home from my sister's wedding early," the principal said. "I did it because I had four messages from you, one from the testing center, two from parents, and one from the Cromwell scholarship committee."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. You were the only one who called me before the exam." She opened the folder. "We'll deal with the tickets in a minute. First I need to read you something."
"Is this about last March?" I asked.
She nodded.
"Cromwell asked for the file on the Delaney Shore matter, and I wanted to read it before I sent it. I found something I should have noticed a year ago."
She turned a page around so I could see it.
It was the report I had signed.
It was one sheet, in my own handwriting, with the date and my name at the bottom.
Under the date there was a printed line that the office clerk had added when she scanned the file.
