Chapter 4: Robby's Truck

Robby's truck was older than both of us, and the passenger door only opened from the inside.

He reached across and pushed it open for me.

"Seat belt's cracked," he said. "Hold it down with your hand."

I held it down with my hand.

We were on the county road in six minutes, with the windows open because the heater could not be turned off.

I plugged my phone into a charger that was held to the dashboard with duct tape.

Fifteen percent.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked.

"You asked for a ride."

"I didn't ask."

"You had the face of someone who was going to." He kept his eyes on the road. "Also you've never told me to hurry up in chemistry."

"That's not a reason."

"It's the only reason I've got that I can say out loud."

I let that go.

We drove past a field of corn that had only just come up, and I tried to think in a straight line.

"Thursday," Robby said. "Around 12:30, I was walking back from the lot. Dane carried a gray plastic bin out the side door and put it in the trunk of Delaney's car."

I turned toward him.

"You saw it."

"I thought it was for the game." He shrugged, and one hand moved on the wheel. "Then you came into the courtyard looking like that, and I thought, that's the box."

"Why didn't you say?"

"You didn't ask me then either."

I looked out the window and did not say anything for a mile.

The Harlan County Testing Center is a low tan building behind a gas station.

There is a flagpole with a faded flag and a sign that says Registered Examinees Only.
