Chapter 18: Pull Them

I turned my phone back on at nine that night and called him.

He answered before it rang twice.

"The shop," I said. "Now."

"Twenty minutes."

Gran was home, upstairs in her own bed with her cast on a cushion and the radio low.

She'd made me promise to wake her if the tall one tried anything.

"Tried what?" I'd said.

"Anything," she'd said. "I've still got a good arm."

He came in through the front door, under the plywood that said WE'RE OPEN.

He stopped inside and looked at the red paint, then at me.

I was standing behind the cutting table, where I'd stood the night he kissed me.

I had my hands flat on it.

"Sit down," I said.

This time he sat.

He took the stool by the radio and put his gloves on his knee.

I told him everything Oakley said.

The father on the end of the bed. The house. The debt. Fifth Shore.

I put the eviction notice on the table and turned it so he could read the small print.

He read it twice.

I watched him read it twice.

"I've never heard of Fifth Shore Partners," he said.
