"Which detective?" I said.
"He doesn't know yet. A man in a gray suit came down and took her upstairs."
I spat the pins into my palm.
Across the workroom, Gran looked up from the rugelach with her eyebrows raised.
"Then go find out," I said.
"I can't walk into a precinct, Jemma."
"Why not?"
"Because I've walked out of three courthouses."
His voice stayed flat. "If I walk into that building, every cop in it thinks I came for her."
"Did you?"
The line went quiet.
"No," he said. "I came for you. I always come for you."
"Then call me the second you know a name."
I hung up before he could tell me to stay where I was.
Gran held out her good hand for my pincushion.
"Go," she said. "I'll keep the girl with the broom company."
The creative director was standing in the door with her glasses on their chain.
She didn't ask a single question.
She just stepped aside.
I called Cosima from the white staircase.
"Union Street," she said, before I'd finished. "That's my precinct. Half of them drink at my bar."
