Chapter 24: The Pier
Oakley screamed.
He dragged her by the hair toward the end of the boards, where there was no railing at all.
"Cosima," I said.
She was already throwing the car into gear.
She flicked the headlights on high, put her hand flat on the horn and drove straight down the pier.
The hatchback bucked over the planks.
In the headlights the man in the gray suit turned, one arm up over his eyes.
He let go of Oakley's hair.
Then he shoved her with both hands, hard, in the middle of the back.
She went off the end of the pier.
There was just a white flash of her sweatshirt in the lights, and then nothing.
Cosima stood on the brakes.
I was out of the car before it stopped, running down the boards in my sneakers.
"Oakley!"
The end of the pier dropped straight into the river, eight feet down.
The water was black and moving fast.
Her head came up ten feet out.
She went under again.
She came up closer, gasping, with her hands tied together in front of her with a plastic strip.
