Chapter 25: Sorry

"Where is it?" Dom said.

Oakley's teeth were chattering too hard to answer.

She lifted one shaking hand out of his coat and pointed at me.

"Her shop," she said.

At half past nine Gran opened the back door in her housecoat with the yardstick in her good hand.

She looked us over.

Me soaked to the hips. Cosima with river on her whites. Dom in his shirtsleeves. Oakley in Dom's overcoat, dripping on the step.

"Of course," Gran said. "Who else would it be?"

She sent Oakley into the bathroom with a towel and her old flannel housecoat.

When Oakley came out, she went straight to the rack along the back-room wall.

That rack is where things wait for pickup.

Oakley pushed the hangers apart and pulled out a navy police uniform jacket.

"Eighteen dollars," Gran said. "He never came back."

Oakley laid it on the cutting table and turned it inside out.

"You showed me once," she said to me. "Slip stitch."

I looked at the lining.

Down the inside seam, under the left arm, ran six inches of the worst stitches I'd ever seen.

A drunk spider had walked straight up the jacket.
