Chapter 27: Same Ballroom
He looked at my chin for a long time.
"When it's over," he said.
"When it's over."
He nodded once.
Then my phone buzzed on his nightstand.
It was seven in the morning on a Sunday, and it was the creative director.
"The ballroom on Park. Saturday the 21st, 8 p.m. Your six gowns, your name. Yes or no by noon."
I held the phone up so he could read it.
He read it twice.
"Saturday is Matty's feast," he said.
"Where?"
"Cosima's. It's always Cosima's. The whole family at one long table."
"In front of the family," I said. "That's what the old man said."
I sat up with the sheet around me.
"That hotel has two ballrooms, Dom. I've seen the floor plan on the booking. A big one, and a smaller one across the hall."
He went very still.
"Every wife in your family watches my show in one room," I said. "Every husband eats Matty's dinner in the other."
"And Oakley?"
"Oakley walks last."
He looked at me.
I typed my answer to the creative director.
"Yes."
On Monday Oakley sat at Gran's kitchen table upstairs in a borrowed sweater with a cup of tea she hadn't touched.
