Chapter 8: Prove It

The bell rang behind him, and my phone started buzzing on the cutting table before it stopped.

It buzzed again.

Then it didn't stop at all.

Dom picked it up before I could and turned the screen to me.

Oakley's face filled it, with her ring light making two white moons in her eyes.

She was sitting on her white couch in a cream sweater, holding a tissue she didn't need.

"I need to talk to you guys about something really scary," she said. "Somebody stole my identity."

She held up a screenshot of my profile.

"This girl made a fake me on a dating app and used it to scam rich men for money."

She dabbed her eye. "And I know exactly who she is. She's the seamstress I fired this month for ruining my gowns."

She held up a picture of the shop.

Our window, our door, Gran's painted letters.

Cregan's Alterations, Fifth Avenue, Bay Ridge.

"Her name is Jemma Cregan. Please, if she's done this to you, report her. She's always been a scammer."

The video had been up for nineteen minutes.

It had four hundred thousand views.

Dom put the phone face down on the table.

"Do you want it gone?" he said.

"What?"

"The video. Her account. Do you want it gone?"

I looked at him.

He meant it.

"No," I said. "Don't touch it. Don't touch her. Don't touch anything."

"Jemma."

"You promised me."

He held my eyes a long time.

Then he nodded once and put his hands in his coat pockets.

By nine that night the shop had eleven hundred one-star reviews.

Scammer. Catfish. Thief. Check your bank account after a hem.

Somebody posted our home phone number, and it rang until Gran pulled the cord out of the wall.

At ten the next morning a bride called and canceled her fitting.
