Chapter 17: The Night Before the Vote

Valentin tried to stand at eleven that night, and his legs folded under him.

I caught him under the arms before he hit the rug.

He was heavy and hot and furious, and he did not say a word.

The second vial hung from the curtain rod, nearly empty.

The doctor had gone back to his locked room with a plate of food, and Doyle was downstairs counting men.

"Tomorrow at noon," Valentin said through his teeth, "I walk into that hall on my own legs, or I don't go."

"You'll go."

"Nina. The families won't swear to a man who has to be carried."

"Then you won't be carried."

I got him back onto the edge of the bed and went to the closet.

His black suit hung on the left, the one he wore to funerals and closings.

I took the shirt, the tie, the cuff links in their little leather tray.

"What are you doing?"

"Dressing you."

"I can dress myself."

"You can't button a cuff, Valentin. I watched you try this morning."

His jaw set.

I knelt between his knees on the rug and took his left hand in both of mine.

It shook, a fine fast tremor under the skin, and I pressed my thumbs into the tendons of his wrist until it slowed.
