We married on Pier Three, on the bare boards where the warehouse had stood.
The ruin had been cleared the week before, down to the last black beam.
Valentin's men had laid a plank deck over the old foundation and set out sixty folding chairs facing the water.
It was seven in the morning, cold and clear, with the sun coming up gold behind the cranes.
I stood at the end of the dock in a plain ivory dress.
No veil. No pins. A braid down my back, tied with a strip of the same silk.
My mother's thin gold band hung on a chain under my collar, against my skin.
The other ring was on my left hand, a square diamond, and it did not feel like a prop.
Doyle stood beside me in a black overcoat, with his hat in one hand.
"You don't have to do this part," I said. "I could walk alone."
"Miss." He cleared his throat. "I've given away nothing in my whole life. Let me have this."
I took his arm.
The old boss waited at the far end of the aisle.
He wore a gray suit and held a worn black book.
Behind him stood the dock bosses in two rows, and the doctor.
