Chapter 20: Signed

Calla's POV

I went down the back stairs in Cormac's shirt with a coat over it, and I unlocked the bakery door myself.

Kendrick stood on the step with snow in his hair.

"I didn't knock," he said. "I saw your window and I didn't want to be the thing that interrupted."

"How long have you been out here?"

"Since noon." He tried to smile. "Watched the bread deliveries come and go."

Behind me, the stair creaked.

Cormac came down in his trousers and stopped at the bottom, one hand on the rail.

He didn't speak, and he didn't come closer.

Kendrick looked at him, and then looked at me.

"I'm not here to fight," Kendrick said.

"Then what are you here for?"

He held out the white envelope.

"Open it."

I slid out the pages.

There were four of them, stapled, with a court's seal at the top.

It was a petition for divorce, and on the last page my name was typed beside a blank, and his was already signed.

His handwriting was neat, and it had not shaken.

"You don't have to sign anything today," he said. "It's all there. I paid the filing fee. My lawyer says the court makes you wait four months anyway, so you can take as long as you need."

"You went to a lawyer."

"On Monday."

"Without asking me."

"I know." He swallowed. "I thought if I asked, you'd have to answer. I wanted you to be able to just not."

I looked at the signature again.
