Chapter 13: Three Years of Notes
Chadwick carried the box down the front steps of the estate himself, with the pink ribbon trailing over his arm.
He didn't let the driver touch it.
In the back seat he held it on his knees all the way to Newton.
"Fire her this morning," he said, to the window. "I'll have security walk her out of the tower."
"No."
His head turned.
"Eileen, she kept thirty-one letters from my own hand."
"I know what she kept."
"Then why..."
"Because if you fire her today, she says you threw her out for being a girl in the way," I said. "Eleanor's footage shows a lunch box. It doesn't show a thief. Your lawyers will call it a personnel matter."
He stared at the box.
"I want her in the room when it falls," I said. "With people watching, and nowhere to cry."
His jaw moved.
"And until then?"
"You keep her on leave and you say nothing. You don't change your face."
"You're asking me to sit across from her."
"I'm asking you to do something hard," I said. "You've been good at it this week."
He didn't answer.
When we pulled up at my parents' house, the porch light was already on.
My mother opened the door before I knocked, and she looked at Chadwick, and at the box, and she did not say a word about either.
"Your father's in the garage," she said. "He's hiding. I made soup."
I took my old room.
At nine Chadwick knocked.
I opened the front door instead of my bedroom door, because my father's chair was in the hall and I did not want an audience.
He stood on the porch with one envelope in his hand and his coat unbuttoned.
"I won't come in," he said. "I wanted to read you something."
