Chapter 4: The Gown in Her Size

The gown arrived at four on Saturday, in a garment bag with Lacey's handwriting on the tag.

"Thought you'd want one less thing to worry about," said the note pinned to the zipper.

It was a pale green silk that someone had been proud of.

I held it against myself in the bedroom mirror.

It stopped four inches above my hip.

The tailor's tag inside said size zero.

I am a size six, and Lacey Dunne had seen my measurements on file every year since she started.

The year before, she had done the same thing, and I had cried in the bathroom for an hour.

I hung the gown back on its hanger and zipped the bag.

Then I went to the back of my closet and took out the silver dress.

I had bought it for our wedding reception three years ago, and it still fit.

The Higginson Foundation gala filled the whole ballroom of the Langham with three hundred people in black tie.

Chadwick stood at the door with his hand at my back and nodded to every person who looked at us.

"You didn't wear the green," he said, without moving his lips.

"It didn't fit."

His fingers pressed once against my spine.

"She ordered it in the wrong size?"

"Everyone makes mistakes."

He looked down at me, and his eyes went over the silver dress and back to my face, slowly.

"You wore this to our wedding."

"I like it."

"So did I," he said, and his voice had dropped.

Across the room, a girl in white lace held a champagne flute with both hands.

Lacey had pinned her hair up with pearls.
