Chapter 11: The Lake House

He was waiting by his truck when I came out of the rink at eleven.

The team bus had gone. The lot was empty and the lake wind came straight off the water.

I walked up to him and stopped close enough to feel his coat against mine.

"Now," I said.

He did not smile.

"The terms were one night, Hanna. At the gala. Nothing real."

"The gala is over."

"This will be real."

"I know." I took hold of his lapel. "I don't care. I'm tired of being the only person who isn't getting what she wants. Take me somewhere with a door."

He opened the truck.

His house was twenty minutes up the shore road, a low cedar place with the lake at the back door and no neighbors in sight.

Neither of us said a word in the truck.

I kept my hands in my lap, because if I moved them I would not stop.

He had the door unlocked and shut behind us before I had my jacket off.

Then he turned and I was against the wall.

His mouth came down on mine, hard and starving, and I made a sound I had never made in my life.

His hand went into my hair and held my head where he wanted it.

I got both hands under his shirt and dragged my nails up his back.

He growled into my mouth.

"Wrong captain," he said against my lip.

"Right one," I said. "Shut up."

He laughed, one dark rough breath, and lifted me.

My legs went around his waist and he carried me through the dark living room to the bedroom, with his mouth on my throat.

He set me on the edge of the bed and stood over me.

I pulled his shirt off.

His chest was broad and hard, scarred in places, with a line of pale hair going down.

I put my mouth on the center of it and felt him shudder.
