Chapter 14: The Emeralds

I tied Vovo's black headscarf over his eyes and pulled the knot snug at the back of his head.

"Can you see anything?" I asked.

"Not a thing, Captain."

"Good."

He sat on the edge of the bunk in the loft, naked, with his hands open on his knees.

The rain had stopped.

A thin gray dawn leaked through the gaps in the boards.

We had waded out of the passage with the sea at our knees and the necklace buttoned inside his shirt.

I had pulled the tin flour bin out from under the workbench.

The emeralds had hidden in it for an hour, and they had come out with a little puff of white.

I had blown them clean.

They lay against my bare skin now, cold and heavy, and nothing else covered me.

"Eight years ago it was dark because we didn't know any better," I said. "Tonight it's dark because I say so."

"Yes, Captain."

"You don't take that off until I tell you," I said.

"I won't."

"You keep your hands on your knees," I said.

He gripped them.

I stood in front of him and let him wait.

His face was turned up toward me, and his lips were parted.

I could see his chest rising.

He could hear me breathing, and I let him hear it.

I took the necklace in my fingers and lifted it from my throat.

Then I laid the stones against the hollow of his neck.

He jerked.

"Cold?" I said.

"Jesus."

"That's a hundred and fifty years of cold," I said. "Hold still."

I drew the necklace slowly down the middle of his chest.

It left a faint track of gooseflesh in its wake.

I trailed it over his ribs, around his nipples, down his stomach.

His muscles tightened under it, one by one.

"What does it feel like?" I asked.

"Cold," he said. "Then you."

"Try again."

"Being looked at," he said, hoarse. "By someone who owns me."

I felt that in my knees.

I laid the cold stones across his thighs, just short of where he was hard, and let them rest there.

His cock jumped against the air.

I did not touch it.

"Octavia," he said.

"Not yet."

"You like this."

"I love this," I said. "I love that you can't see what I'm going to do."

I put the necklace back around my own neck.
