Chapter 17: The Dress
The seamstress would not be hurried.
She had pinned, unpinned and repinned my dress for three weeks, in a back room behind a tailor's shop in the Fifth Ward.
In that time the drivers had wedged the iron door open at every low tide and kept a boat at the rocks.
My aunt had sent no more envelopes.
She was saving it all for the stage.
Now the seamstress stood back with a mouth full of pins and her head on one side.
"Turn," she said.
I turned on the little wooden box in front of the long mirror.
The dress was a deep, clear sea green.
It was cut close through the waist, and the skirt fell in a long line to the floor.
The back dipped low between my shoulder blades.
I did not know the woman in the glass.
She was broad through the shoulder and strong through the hip, and she stood with her weight on both feet and her chin up.
