Chapter 19: The Tab
I did not answer Bea's text.
At nine the next morning a young man in a gray suit stood at the head of the Lucia's slip.
He held a cream envelope in both hands.
He had been told to deliver it and not to look at anyone.
I came down the loft stairs in Tiago's sweater and bare feet.
"Miss Tillinghast," he said. "I'm to wait for your answer."
I took the envelope and opened it.
The card inside was thick and engraved, in my aunt's hand.
Tea at Windward, four o'clock, alone.
We can be reasonable, Octavia. There is still a place for you at the table.
I read it twice.
I could feel Tiago standing behind me on the stairs, saying nothing, with his arms folded.
He would not step in.
He had taken my orders for a month, and he would take this one too.
"Please tell my aunt no," I said.
"I beg your pardon?"
"No. Thank you. I won't be coming to tea."
A smaller card was folded behind it.
I slid that one into my sweater pocket.
I tore the tea card in half and put the halves back in the envelope.
I gave it back to him.
"I'll be at the ball on Saturday," I said. "She can say whatever she likes to me there."
The young man swallowed, nodded, and left much faster than he had come.
I turned around.
Tiago had come down two steps, and his face was open and bright.
"You didn't even want to hear it," he said.
"I heard it for eight years."
I took his hand and led him up the stairs to the loft.
On the workbench lay the green notebook where he kept the tab.
