Chapter 20: The Shed Door
Tiago's POV
On Saturday afternoon the drivers ran the arrival twice, in the harbor, with no guests and no lamps.
Six launches fell in behind the Lucia in a line.
At the signal they swung out into a long crescent and came back together at a slow idle.
Their bows pointed at an imaginary stone dock.
The big man with the gray ponytail brought his boat in so gently that the fenders only whispered.
"Third time's the one," he called across the water. "Your lady will think we've done it all our lives."
"We have," I called back.
He grinned and touched his cap.
I looked at the clock on the wheelhouse wall.
It was five.
Lantern Night began at the first lamp, and the first lamp was lit at dusk.
I had less than an hour.
I tied the Lucia up in the slip under the shed.
I said good night to six of the best men I knew and climbed the loft stairs.
The door at the top stood open.
I stopped on the threshold.
Octavia was walking across the loft in the sea-green dress.
She had put it on without telling me.
Her hair was pinned up with Vovo's tortoiseshell combs, and her bare shoulders were gold in the late sun.
She walked the length of the room with her chin high and her back straight.
She walked it again.
At the far wall she stopped, drew a breath, and looked at the three wooden steps that led down to the shed floor.
Then she lifted the skirt in one hand and went down them, slowly, one at a time.
"The hem," she muttered. "The wet. Don't look at your feet. Don't look at them."
