Chapter 16: Mirror

His closet had a mirror on the back of the door, tall and wide and a little foggy at the edges.

I had noticed it the first night.

I'd been thinking about it ever since.

"Stand up," I said.

Axel stood beside the bed, naked, his eyes still red from crying.

I took his hand and walked him across the room.

I turned him until he faced the glass.

"Sit," I said.

He lowered himself onto the edge of the bench at the foot of the bed, the one that faced the mirror.

I stood behind him.

I put my hands on his shoulders and looked at us both in the glass.

He was huge, even sitting, broad and dark with that scarred chest and the compass on his forearm.

I was pale and silver and naked behind him, with my braid undone and my hair wild around my face.

We looked like two people who had survived something.

"Look," I said.

"I'm looking."

"At yourself."

His eyes lifted to his reflection and flinched.

"I want you to see it," I said into his ear. "What you look like when you're wanted."

I kissed the side of his neck.

I dragged my nails down his chest, slowly, over the scar on his ribs.

I watched his stomach jump in the glass.

"Eyes open," I said.

"They are."

"Watch my hand."

I closed it around him.

In the mirror I saw my pale fingers around his dark thick length, and the head of him flushed and wet against my thumb.

I stroked him once, slowly.

His breath hitched.

"Look how hard you are," I said. "For me."

"Always for you."

"Look at your face."

His face was open and helpless, with his lips parted and his brow drawn tight.

I stroked him again.

He gripped the edge of the bench with both hands.
