Chapter 5: Back on His Edges

By the third week I had a pass that got me into the tunnel behind the Frost bench.

I stood there in my black jacket with a clipboard I didn't need and watched the arena fill up.

Lakeshore Arena held eighteen thousand people, and tonight most of them wore green.

The noise came down the tunnel.

"You are standing in my spot," said a voice behind me.

I turned.

Mikko Rautio, the Frost's goalie, was leaning against the cinder block in full pads.

A green towel hung over his neck.

He grinned at me with his mask pushed up on top of his head.

He had a crooked grin and a sandy beard, and he looked about twelve years old.

"I'm sorry," I said. "I didn't know this was a spot."

"Every goalie has a spot to throw up." He stuck out a glove. "Mikko. I'm the one who stops the puck. You're the one who made our captain stop skating like a lawn chair."

I shook the glove.

"Kaisa."

"I know who you are." His grin went softer. "He talks about you in his sleep. We share rooms on the road."

My face got hot.

"He doesn't."

"He says the same word for twenty minutes. I'll let you guess."

"Mikko."

"I'm just saying." He held up both hands. "It's nice to hear a different word. For three years it was just 'goalie, pass me the puck.'"

I laughed.

I couldn't help it.

He tapped the towel on his shoulder. "Lucky," he said. "Washed it zero times since October. It's why we're winning. Don't tell my wife."

"Your wife knows about the towel?"

"She buys me new ones. I put the old ones back on." He winked. "Go on. Watch your boy."
