Chapter 8: The Fitting

Three weeks before the wedding, I stood on a small round platform in the best dress shop in the city while a tailor pinned my hem.

Donna Livia sat in a velvet chair with a cup of coffee, supervising.

"Higher at the waist," she said.

"Donna, it's fine."

"It isn't." She set her cup down. "You're marrying the only Corradi who notices when a woman's cold. Stand tall and let him see you."

The tailor hid a smile.

My face went warm.

"He noticed?" I said.

"He asked me for the name of your favorite flower, once." Donna Livia tilted her head. "Years ago. You were still engaged to the wrong one. I told him it was none of his business."

I stared at her in the mirror.

"What did you tell him?"

"That it was white ranunculus." She smiled. "He's been quietly putting them in your father's lobby every Monday since."

I thought of the white flowers in the lobby, and the doorman who never said who sent them.

I had assumed it was Dario's assistant.

Dario had never sent me flowers in his life.

"Giulia," Donna Livia said, softer. "I'm not asking you to love my son. I'm only telling you, he's no fool, and he's been waiting a long time to be chosen for something."

I looked down at the cream silk pooled around my feet.

I didn't know what to say.

The tailor said, "Done, Signorina," and I stepped off the platform.

"Go and see him," said Donna Livia, reaching for her coffee again. "He's in the second fitting room. And Giulia, knock."
