Chapter 12: The Order

I read the page twice, standing in his coat on the roof of the theater where my father died.

Beneath my photograph, a typed block listed the details.

Subject, Portia Marceau, twenty-six, dancer, Meridian Ballet.

Client, V.A.

Accepted by S.K. on the eleventh.

Deadline, before the Giselle premiere.

The eleventh was eight days before I signed Victor's contract.

It was a week before I had stood in the board room and asked for page ten.

I turned the page.

There was a second photograph, taken from across a street.

It showed me at the bus stop outside my apartment, with my dance bag on my shoulder, looking at my phone.

I had no memory of that day.

Someone had watched me for a long time.

My hands were perfectly steady.

I closed the folder and waited.

Alec came back across the tar paper, pocketing his phone, and he was smiling.

The smile left him when he saw the folder in my hand.

He stopped four feet away.

"Portia," he said.

"Is this mine?"

"Yes."

"Is that your handwriting on the corner? Accepted by S.K.?"

"Yes."

A wind came across the roof and flapped the pages.

I held them down.

"You said you weren't here for me," I said.

"I lied."

"You said you didn't have orders for me."

"I lied about that too."
