Chapter 19: The Meeting

Elliot's POV

I called the meeting on Friday night.

There were three of us on the share register: me, with fifty-one percent, my mother with thirty-three, and my brother with sixteen.

A notice went out under the company seal by courier, and my mother had it in her hand by nine.

Special meeting of the shareholders. Nine o'clock Saturday morning. The yard office.

She phoned me four times.

I let it go to voicemail, which I had learned, lately, can be a decent thing.

Spencer came himself.

He walked into the office at ten, still in his rehearsal clothes, and shut the door and sat on the edge of my desk like it was his.

"Nine o'clock on my wedding day," he said. "You're a funny man, El."

"It's the day the bank wants an answer."

"It's the day I get married."

"You can be late to your own wedding. The loans can't."

He picked up the courier notice, read it, and set it down.

"What's on the agenda?"

"One item. The Fossum issue of shares."

"Then it's a formality." He smiled. "Sign the thing, shake hands in the morning, and we're all in the garden by six. Mom has a tailor standing by."

"I'm not signing."

He went on smiling for a moment, as if he'd misheard.

"Say again?"

"I won't sign the issue. Not tomorrow, not after the wedding, not at all."

The smile thinned.

"You don't mean that."

"Ask me why."
