Chapter 4: Hands Only

Diane took the phone out of Elliot's hand.

She did it gently and ended the call with her thumb.

"Don't be hasty," she said. "Nobody needs lawyers. We're having the engagement dinner Friday night, here at the house, and Margot will come. We'll sit down as a family and sort everything out."

"Sort it out how?" I said.

"After the wedding," Diane said. "When the Fossums' arrangement has closed and the yard can breathe."

She smiled at me and the smile stayed on her face.

"Stay for lunch," she said.

"No, thank you," I said.

Elliot picked up his keys.

In the driveway I stood beside his truck and shook.

It was not a sad shake.

My whole body was too angry to stand still.

"She's going to pay me after the wedding," I said. "And nobody at that wedding will ever say who did what."

"She isn't going to pay you after the wedding," Elliot said. "She's going to buy time until it's too late for you to say anything."

"I know."

"Get in. You're freezing."

"I'm always freezing."

He opened the passenger door and waited.

I got in.

The cab smelled like cedar and coffee.

He started the engine and didn't put it in gear.

"A loan against my shares takes weeks," he said. "There's a lawyer, a pledge, a signature from the other directors. It won't happen before the wedding."

"So I get nothing."

"You get it. Later." He rubbed his jaw. "But I don't think you came for the money only."

I looked out the window.
