Chapter 7: Day Ninety

The yard office had one light on at nine at night.

I knew because I had driven past it twice and parked across the road to be sure.

Elliot's truck was by the loading dock.

I went in without knocking.

He was at a desk piled with ledgers, in shirtsleeves, with a pencil behind his ear and his reading glasses pushed up on his forehead.

He looked up and took the glasses off.

"Margot."

"You pledged your shares to the bank," I said.

He didn't ask who told me.

"Yes."

"If the wedding falls through and the loans go bad, you lose them."

"Yes."

"When were you going to say?"

"I wasn't." He set the pencil down. "You didn't come here to save the Eisenharts. You came for what you were owed. I didn't want you to hear that and think you had to hold a wedding together for me."

"I don't think that."

"Good."

"I think you're an idiot," I said. "You'd lose your grandfather's yard to keep your brother from marrying a woman who lied to him."

"She didn't lie to him." He rubbed his eyes. "Not on purpose. He's the one who thanked the wrong person. That's the part I can't make sense of."

"What do you mean?"

"Nothing. Forget it."

I hated it when people said that.

I shoved a crate of hinge samples off the end of the desk to clear a place to stand, and the lid snapped up and caught the edge of my palm.

I sucked in a breath.

A line of red opened across the heel of my hand.
