Chapter 17: Run the Market

Gus got to her first.

He went up the bandstand steps in one jump and was on his knees beside her before the scissors stopped ringing.

"Gram. Gram, look at me."

Her eyes were open. Her lips were the color of putty.

"Don't fuss," she whispered.

Then her eyes closed.

I had my phone out. I don't remember dialing.

I remember shouting the address of the town green into it.

A woman in a sun hat pushed through the crowd and dropped to her knees across from Gus. She was a nurse.

I remember Gus's face.

He looked twelve years old.

The ambulance took her to Burlington. Gus rode in the back with her.

I followed in the Subaru, doing eighty, with his truck keys still in my pocket.

The cardiac floor smelled like floor wax and burnt coffee.

They'd taken her straight through a pair of double doors. A sign said Authorized Personnel Only.

Gus stood in front of the doors with his arms at his sides. He didn't sit. He didn't move.

He'd been standing for an hour when I came back with two coffees.
