Chapter 18: Twenty-Three Thousand Short

Gus started forward.

I put my hand on his arm.

"Go sit with her," I said. "Shut the door. Don't let her hear this."

He looked at me for one long second.

Then he went down the hall to Avis's room and closed the door behind him.

I walked up to the nurses' station.

Celia turned and saw me, and her smile didn't even flicker.

"Willa. How nice. I was so sorry to hear."

"How did you hear?"

"It's a small town. I own a motel in it."

She patted the folder. "I've drawn up something simple. Mrs. Tibbetts sells the building at our original price. She gets a lovely apartment in Burlington near her doctors. No stairs."

"Miss Tibbetts," I said. "She never married. Your father-in-law saw to that."

Two nurses at the station stopped typing.

"She's eighty years old," Celia said, lightly, for their benefit. "Her heart has just told her what I've been telling her since May. Somebody has to be sensible for her."

"She had a stent put in eleven hours ago."

"Which is why she'll want this settled. She owes eighty-four thousand dollars by the fifth of August, and she hasn't got it."
