Chapter 24: Sunset at the Dock
The box I brought was cedar, with a brass hook on the lid.
Gus had made it two winters ago to hold watch parts and never used it.
Avis was already at the end of the ferry dock when we came down the hill.
She sat on the bench by the last post with her cane across her knees.
The lake had gone orange behind her.
The ferry was halfway across to New York, small as a toy.
"You're late," she said.
"It's six fifty-nine," Gus said.
"Then you're nearly late."
She held out her hand for the box. I gave it to her.
She opened it on her lap.
Then she reached into her cardigan pocket and took out two letters.
One was the old one from Boston, so soft it hardly rustled.
The other had never been mailed.
She laid them in the cedar box, one on top of the other, and closed the lid.
"For the shop," she said, and handed it back to me.
I stared at her.
"Avis. You can't sell those."
"Watch me. You'll write the tag."
