Chapter 7: The Ring in the Corner
I didn't touch the ring.
"You don't have to sell it," I said.
"I'm not keeping it in my case another four years."
"Then tell me about it. I can't write a tag for something I don't know."
Gus looked at the rain on the window for a long time.
Then he pulled my one chair over and sat down on it backward, arms folded on the back.
"Her name doesn't matter," he said. "We were together three years. I made that ring at Gram's bench over a whole winter. I proposed in the shop, after closing, because I'm an idiot and that's the only place I'm not nervous."
"That's not idiotic."
"Wait." He rubbed his thumb over a scar on his knuckle. "The church was the white one up the hill. Ninety people. Gram in a hat. I stood up front for forty minutes."
The rain got louder.
"Her maid of honor came down the aisle by herself. She handed me a note. It said, I'm sorry, I can't live in a town with one street."
"Oh, Gus."
"She left the ring on her dresser. Her mother brought it back to the shop the next week. Set it on the counter like a library book."
"And you put it in the case."
"I couldn't melt it down. It's the best thing I ever made." He stood up and put the chair back. "Write whatever you want. Just don't make me sound sad."
"You are sad."
"Don't make me sound it."
He went back out into the rain.
On Sunday Avis made a pot roast.
Avis's house sat up the hill behind the white church, with a porch that leaned and a kitchen painted the yellow of an egg yolk.
