Chapter 7: Papers

The lawyer arrived on Thursday at nine in the morning with a leather folder and a fountain pen.

My mother had me called down to the study, where the whole family was waiting.

Russell sat in the wing chair by the window with his legs crossed.

Chet stood against the bookshelves, with his arms folded and his eyes on the carpet.

My father was in the corner, in a chair nobody had offered him.

"It's a trust update," my mother said. "It consolidates the family holdings under one structure. Russell has been kind enough to help me see the gaps."

"What gaps?" I said.

"It's all in here." The lawyer opened the folder. "Initial here, here and here, and a signature on the last page."

I looked at the page.

It was twelve pages of tight print.

I read the first paragraph, and then I read it again.

It said that the undersigned voluntarily transferred full voting control of her shares to a managing partner.

The managing partner was a company I had never heard of.

The company's address was a post office box.

"This isn't a trust," I said. "This is giving them away."

"Don't be dramatic, June," my mother said.

"Who owns this company?"

"It's a vehicle," Russell said, easily. "It's a convenience. We don't want a daughter who works nights worrying about proxy votes."

"I'm not worried. I'd like a friend of mine to read it."
