Chapter 14: The Coat

"Porter," Eli said. "Not here."

"Why not here? She's lying in a bed, she's pregnant with my family's child, and you've been standing over her like a saint."

I sat up against the pillows.

My hand was on the call button. I did not press it.

"Say it," I told Porter.

"Cora, you don't want this."

"Say what he did."

Porter looked at Eli. Eli's face had gone very still.

"He found you under that window," Porter said.

"What window?"

"The attic. Your mother's house. You'd broken your leg climbing out of it and you were lying in the frozen flower bed with the phone in your hand."

"You were on that phone," I said. "I called you. You came."

"I came late."

The nurses did not breathe.

"He was already there," Porter said. His voice was climbing. "He'd called an ambulance. He had his coat on you. He sat in the dirt and held your head until they came."

"No."

"I heard it all on the line. Your phone never hung up. I drove across town listening to a stranger tell you to stay awake."

I looked at the gray wool coat on the chair.

I could not make my eyes move off it.

"I got to the hospital doors as they were taking you in," Porter said. "And he was standing there. Walking. Barely. He had woken from a coma only three weeks before that."

"Porter," Eli said.

"And I told him you were mine. I told him you'd never want a Draper near you. That your family had sold you to his, and you'd hate him for it."
