Chapter 19: What Daisy Said

I went to see my sister that afternoon.

Eli said he would drive me and wait in the car. I told him I was not afraid of Daisy.

I was a little afraid of Daisy.

She lay in a private room at a hospital across the river, not Ellsworth's, with a pink blanket pulled to her chin.

She was not wearing a sling. She was not wearing makeup.

Her hair hung in strings, and she looked about fifteen.

The door clicked, and she turned her head.

"You," she said.

"Hello, Daisy."

"Get out."

"I will in a minute."

"You did this."

She sat up, and her voice cracked in the middle.

"You did this to me. You shoved me, and then you stood on a stage and called me a liar in front of everyone. I lost it because of you."

"I didn't touch you."

"I know what the video says!" Her face crumpled. "I know I fell on purpose! That's not what I mean!"

"What do you mean?"

"The whole week," she said. "The screaming, and the cameras. Porter looked at me on that stage like I was dirt. I couldn't eat. I couldn't sleep. And this morning I woke up bleeding."

She pressed the heel of her hand against her mouth.

"It was real," she said. "It was real, Cora."

I stood by the bed with my bag on my arm.

I thought of every message she had sent me. We've done it in your bed. In your car.

I thought of the lace in the seat.

I thought of the doctor's flat, careful face saying threatened.

"I'm sorry," I said.

She stared at me.

"I'm sorry you lost it. I mean that."

"Don't be kind to me."

"I'm not being kind. I know what it is."

"You don't!"

"Daisy. I was bleeding in a hospital bed last weekend. I am still afraid every time I use the bathroom."
