Chapter 23: The Banner
A few people in the crowd laughed, uncertain.
Most didn't.
The big screen above the ice showed Nils's face, gray and wet, and his father's hand on his shoulder.
I was on my feet.
I didn't remember standing.
Nils looked at the hand on his shoulder.
He didn't shake it off.
He just stood there, the way he had in the lounge.
Then I heard skates.
The same sound I'd heard at the family skate.
Fast and hard, coming down the ice from the blue line.
Erik stopped beside his brother in a spray of snow.
He was in his full uniform, number 19, his helmet in his hand, his stick in the other.
He didn't look at his father.
He looked at Nils.
Then he dropped his stick on the carpet, reached over, and took his father's hand off his brother's shoulder.
Just lifted it off.
He put his own arm around Nils instead.
Nils's face crumpled.
The arena saw it.
The big screen showed it, twenty feet high.
Two brothers, one in a jersey, one on a fake leg, and their father standing a step away with a microphone in his fist.
