Then she blew out the candle.
All at once, with her whole chest, the way she does everything.
Jodie dropped her lighter on the porch.
Erik made a sound behind me.
I didn't turn around.
I didn't have to.
I could feel him going red from three feet away.
"Bug," I said carefully. "That's a big wish."
"It's a birthday wish. They're supposed to be big."
"You know you can't just order one, right?"
Ingrid looked at me.
"I know how babies work, Mommy. Aunt Jodie told me."
I turned and looked at Jodie.
Jodie picked up her lighter and studied it.
"In general terms," she said. "Very general. Seeds were involved."
Erik sat down on the bottom stair.
He put his face in his hands.
His shoulders were shaking.
I thought he was dying.
Then I realized he was laughing.
Ingrid climbed up into his lap with the cake plate and held it under his nose.
"Want some? It's my birthday cake. You can have the burned part."
"Nothing's burned, bug."
"Then you can have the frosting."
