Chapter 10: Eat Your Eggs

On day thirty-four, June made us come to the diner.

She said she wanted to look at both of us in daylight.

It was the Mill Road Diner, with the checkered floor and the pie case by the register, and the booths were full of people who had watched the video.

June took one side of a booth and made Greer and me take the other.

She put her elbows on the table.

"Eat your eggs," she told me.

"I'm eating them."

"You're pushing them. Eat."

Greer was drinking her coffee and watching June over the rim.

"You look tired," June said to her. "Are you sleeping?"

"Some."

"In the apartment? Or in the shed?"

"What's that got to do with you?"

"He's my brother. It's got everything to do with me."

I put my fork down.

"June."

"No, let her answer."

Greer set the cup down in its saucer.

She turned and looked at the whole diner, which had gone a little quieter, and then back at June.

"Fine," she said clearly. "I'm going to take him home tonight and have him."

A fork rang against a plate somewhere behind us.

"I'm going to have him as long as I want, in every way I want, and I'll hate him again in the morning." She picked up the salt. "I'm telling you so you won't ask me again. Pass the pepper."

The waitress dropped her order pad.

June stared at her for one long second.

Then she started to laugh, a honk of a laugh she couldn't stop, her hand over her mouth.

"Oh my God," she said into her fingers. "Oh, good. Fine. Asa, eat your eggs."

I couldn't have swallowed if I'd tried.

Across Main Street, through the diner window, a man in a charcoal suit stood in the door of the gallery.

He had his arms folded.

He wasn't smiling.

I looked at him for a moment, and then Greer's hand closed on my knee under the table.

"Don't look at him," she said, soft, at the side of her mouth. "Look at me."

I looked at her.

She wasn't laughing.

Her eyes were dark and perfectly steady.
