Chapter 6: The Wellness Check

She didn't answer me.

She picked up the tin, tucked it under her arm and walked back across the gravel without looking round.

Her light stayed on in the apartment over the greenhouse until morning.

On the fourth day a white county van pulled into the lot at ten, with a gray sedan behind it.

Darren got out of the sedan.

A woman in a lanyard got out of the van, carrying a clipboard, and neither of them was smiling.

It was a Tuesday, and the greenhouse was full of retirees choosing hanging baskets.

Greer came out of the office with potting soil to her wrists.

She looked at the van, then at Darren, and she didn't move.

"Greer," he said, from the doorway. His voice was low and sorry. "I filed the form last night. It's only for seventy-two hours. They'll look after you."

"What form?"

"A wellness evaluation. You've been under so much strain, and the video is everywhere, and this man is living in your shed."

"He's working in my shed."

"Please. For me."

Nobody in the greenhouse was pretending to look at baskets.

The woman with the clipboard cleared her throat.

"Ms. Lathrop? I'm from the county. Mr. Teller is concerned for your safety. I have to ask whether you'd come with us voluntarily."

I waited for Greer to look at me.

She didn't.

She wiped her hands, one finger at a time, on her apron.
